CITY ART TO SPOTLIGHT NEW LOCAL ARTISTS IN APRIL

SAN FRANCISCO - Making contemporary art available and affordable to local art buyers, creative works by more than a dozen new artists will be exhibited in April at the CITY ART Gallery. An opening reception for the month-long exhibit will be held Friday, April 5, from 7 to 10 p.m. at the 828 Valencia Street gallery.

"We're very excited about the latest group of new artists were spotlighting - there's dazzling talent here, " said Katie Gilmartin, CITY ART core member. "Our objective at CITY ART is to make it possible for folks without a six-figure income to purchase original art by local artists. At CITY ART you can pay affordable prices, hang provocative, cutting-edge or just plain-gorgeous original art on your walls, and at the same time support San Francisco's art community."

Owned and managed by local artists, CITY ART is a cooperative gallery of artists who strive to promote creative awareness and expression in the community.

"The gallery is kept alive by all of its artist members, as well as a large, diverse and loyal customer base," Gilmartin said. "Artists not only hang and sell their art, they have the opportunity to help run a gallery while learning the business of art in a friendly atmosphere."

Local art buyers are encouraged to attend the April 5 exhibit opening reception from 7 to 10 p.m. Those who attend get the first look and an opportunity to buy the newest art to hit the streets of San Francisco. Most of the art sold at the CITY ART Gallery fall within the $100 to $500 price range.

"The friendly atmosphere at CITY ART gives first-time art buyers the opportunity to look at very different types of art without the pressure felt at other galleries," Gilmartin said. "What's unique about CITY ART is that art buyers have the opportunity to hear from an artist - not a gallery salesperson - about the art work they might be interested in purchasing. And at our opening, artists will be giving brief, informal talks about their work and will be available to answer questions.

"The artists whose works are on display in April come from very diverse backgrounds," she said. "From the top art schools to those with no formal art training at all, our artists have one thing in common - real engagement, and interesting, thought-provoking art."

The show runs through April 28. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Sunday from Noon to 9 p.m. CITY ART is located at 828 Valencia Street between 19th and 20th streets and easily accessible by the BART and MUNI. Public parking is available two blocks away on 21st Street between Valencia and Mission streets. CITY ART can be reached at 415-970-9900.
