April 17, 2002 NEW ARTISTS DISPLAY WORK AT CITY ART IN MAY SAN FRANCISCO - Artists new to the CITYART gallery in San Francisco will be exhibiting their work in May. An opening reception for the month-long exhibit will be held Friday, May 3, from 7 to 10 p.m. at the 828 Valencia Street gallery. Local art buyers are encouraged to attend the May 3 exhibit opening reception. Those who attend get the first look and an opportunity to buy the newest art in San Francisco. Most of the art sold at the CITY ART Gallery fall within the $100 to $500 price range. "Our objective at CITY ART is to make it possible for anyone without a six-figure income to purchase original art by local artists," said Katie Gilmartin, CITY ART core member. "At CITY ART you can pay affordable prices, get original art to hang on your walls, and support San Francisco's art community." Owned and managed by local artists, CITY ART is a cooperative gallery of artists who strive to promote creative awareness and expression in the community. ""We're very excited about the latest group of new artists," Gilmartin said. "It is the individual artists working together collectively that keep the gallery alive for the local community. Artists not only hang and sell their art, they have the opportunity to help run a gallery while learning the business of art in a friendly atmosphere." The friendly atmosphere at CITY ART gives first-time art buyers the opportunity to look at very different types of art without the pressure felt at other galleries. Art buyers have the opportunity to hear from an artist - not a gallery salesperson - about the artwork they might be interested in purchasing. The show runs through May 31. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Sunday from Noon to 9 p.m. CITY ART is located at 828 Valencia Street between 19th and 20th streets and easily accessible by the BART and MUNI. Public parking is available two blocks away on 21st Street between Valencia and Mission streets. CITY ART can be reached at 415-970-9900. |
