July 12, 2002 "NAKED IN AUGUST" SHOW SET FOR CITY ART GALLERY SAN FRANCISCO - The Third Annual "Naked In August" exhibit will show at the CITY ART Gallery in San Francisco in August. During the exhibit, a handful of emerging San Francisco artists will display their nude representations through a number of different styles and mediums. An opening reception for the month-long exhibit will be held Friday, Aug. 2, from 7 to 10 p.m. at the 828 Valencia Street gallery. The public is encouraged to attend the opening reception and meet the artists who create the art. The "Naked in August" show is the brainchild of one of the cooperative gallery's member artists, August Wood. "The show began as a combination of my name and my primary artist focus on the nude," Wood said. "For the past three years in August, it's been a popular theme at CITY ART." "The representation of the nude is one of the most enduring themes in art, fascinating to both artist and viewer," Wood said. "It's seen as one of the formative exercises of the artist in training, where the eye is developed and where personal style begins to emerge. "Just about every artist, even if they are self taught, tackles the nude at some time in their career," Wood said. "August is the time of year for CITY ART member artists to share their unique approach to the nude, whether it be in charcoal, oil, clay or photograph." Local art buyers are encouraged to attend the August 2 exhibit opening reception. Those who attend get the first look at the newest nude art in San Francisco. A majority of the art displayed and sold at the CITY ART Gallery fall within the $100 to $500 price range. "Member artists at the CITY ART Cooperative Gallery want to make it possible for anyone - no matter the income level -- to purchase original art," Core Member Katie Gilmartin said. "A person who makes a purchase at CITY ART not only gets the best deal in town, he or she becomes an important part of the development of an emerging artist. And, at the same time, the art buyer supports San Francisco's art community. "Our success at CITY ART can be attributed to the forum we provide for emerging artists to display their work and get the exposure they seek from the local art community," Gilmartin said. "Our monthly shows - such as "Naked In August" - allows our member artists to collectively focus on specific art themes through their own individual interpretations and unique styles." Gilmartin said CITY ART differentiates itself from other local galleries in that the artists who create the art - not sales representatives - operate and manage the gallery. "Our member artists not only hang and sell their art, they have the opportunity to help run a gallery by volunteering to work shifts throughout the month," she said. "Art buyers will not experience the pressure felt at other galleries. If you're a first-time art buyer, CITY ART is the place for you." The "Naked In August" show runs through Aug. 31. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Sunday from Noon to 9 p.m. CITY ART is located at 828 Valencia Street between 19th and 20th streets and easily accessible by the BART and MUNI. Public parking is available two blocks away on 21st Street between Valencia and Mission streets. CITY ART can be reached at 415-970-9900 or through its website at www.cityartgallery.org. |
