CITY ART TO PARTICIPATE IN SAN FRANCISCO'S OPEN STUDIOS

SAN FRANCISCO - The CITY ART Gallery will spotlight more than 30 emerging, local artists in October during the 27th Annual Open Studios. CITY ART, recently named best art gallery by the Bay Guardian newspaper, will celebrate with a "Best of the Bay" exhibit opening, Friday, Oct. 4, from 7 to 10 p.m., kicking off the month-long event.

San Francisco Open Studios, produced by ArtSpan, is held every October to allow the public, free of charge, to visit the workspaces of more than 750 artists around San Francisco during the four weekends of the month. Open Studios weekend at CITY ART will be held Saturday, Oct. 12, and Sunday, Oct. 13. The public is encouraged to attend both the exhibit opening and the Open Studios weekend event at CITY ART.

"CITY ART is proud to be associated with San Francisco Open Studios because our missions are very similar - to promote local artists and make affordable art available to the general public," said Don Anderson, CITY ART Open Studios coordinator. "As a cooperative gallery, CITY ART is owned and operated by local artists with the goal of providing affordable art to local residents while promoting the creative awareness of its artist members."

San Francisco Open Studios was founded in 1975 when a small group of enterprising artists wanted to make artwork accessible to the public. Through this program, artists around San Francisco open their studios to the public each weekend in October.

The Open Studios program gives both emerging and more established San Francisco artists the opportunity to invite the public into their workspaces, sell artwork, build mailing lists and gain exposure. Open Studios is also a unique and fun way for the public to meet artists, see where artwork is created, explore San Francisco's diverse neighborhoods and build collections.

"We encourage the public to take the opportunity to see the latest art work to hit the San Francisco scene by attending an opening night reception and by visiting CITY ART during the Open Studios weekend," Anderson said. "It's a very exciting time to be a part of the San Francisco art community."

CITY ART also encourages the public to join in the celebration of the gallery's "Best of the Bay" award.

"We're very honored to be named the best art gallery in the Bay Area by local media," said CITY ART Core Member Katie Gilmartin. "Our ability to offer exciting and cutting-edge artwork from local artists at affordable prices has gained us the reputation of being the best at what we do. We have a special celebration planned for the opening night reception that the public won't want to miss."

The "Open Studios" exhibit will run through Oct. 31. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Sunday from Noon to 9 p.m. CITY ART is located at 828 Valencia Street between 19th and 20th streets and easily accessible by the BART and MUNI. Public parking is available two blocks away on 21st Street between Valencia and Mission streets. CITY ART can be reached at 415-970-9900 or through its website at www.cityartgallery.org.
