CITY ART TO SPOTLIGHT NEW LOCAL ARTISTS IN MARCH

SAN FRANCISCO - With a goal of making contemporary art available and affordable within the local community, art pieces created by more than a dozen emerging artists will be exhibited in March at the CITY ART Gallery. An opening reception for the month-long exhibit will be held Friday, March 7, from 7 to 10 p.m. at the 828 Valencia Street gallery.

"We're very excited about the latest group of new artists were spotlighting at the gallery in March, " said Katie Gilmartin, CITY ART core member. "We want to make art available to all those folks without a six-figure income. At CITY ART we offer affordable prices for original art created by local, Bay Area artists."

Owned and managed by local artists, CITY ART is a cooperative gallery of artists who strive to promote creative awareness and expression in the community.

"The gallery is kept alive by its member artists and a diverse and loyal customer base," Gilmartin said. "Artists not only hang and sell their art, they help operate the gallery while learning the business of art in a friendly atmosphere."

Local art buyers are encouraged to attend the March 7 exhibit opening reception from 7 to 10 p.m. Those who attend get the first look and an opportunity to buy the newest art to hit the streets of San Francisco. Most of the art sold at the CITY ART Gallery fall within the $100 to $500 price range.

"CITY ART's down-to-earth approach gives first-time art buyers the opportunity to look at very different types of art without any pressure," Gilmartin said. "What's unique about CITY ART is that art buyers have the opportunity to hear from artists - not gallery salespeople - about the art work they might be interested in purchasing. And at our opening, artists will be giving brief, informal talks about their work and will be available to answer questions."

The show runs through March 30. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 9 p.m. CITY ART is located at 828 Valencia Street between 19th and 20th streets and easily accessible by BART and MUNI. Public parking is available two blocks away on 21st Street between Valencia and Mission streets. CITY ART can be reached at 415-970-9900 or through its website at www.cityartgallery.org.
