Sonja Kremer

Artist Bio

Sonja has been living and working in San Francisco since moving from Switzerland in 2022.

Her focus on printmaking took shape in 2020 during a paper lithography workshop with Tom Blaess in Bern, Switzerland, which she kept working on until leaving Switzerland. After moving to San Francisco  she continued to expand her process by studying Mokuhanga, a traditional Japanese woodblock printing, with Tomoko Murakami at Berkeley’s Kala Art Institute. Besides these three techniques Sonja also works with different intaglio techniques such as etching, drypoint and collagraph.

Being a fan of the Bauhaus movement philosophy, Sonja views fine art and hands-on craftsmanship as inseparable. She engages with every phase of the printmaking process—from sketching concepts and carving blocks in wood, linoleum, or experimental materials, to pulling each impression by hand. To preserve the distinct quality of the physical process, her prints are created as either unique or in very small editions.

Sonja’s subject matter stems from spontaneous ideas and recurring thematic series but also picking up a certain topic. Her work draws from personal memories, nature, text, music, and cross-cultural influences. Sonja favors Expressionism, Cubism, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, Art Deco and Bauhaus design.

She currently works out of her studio in San Francisco's Dogpatch neighborhood.
